How healing works

Why your anxiety keeps coming back, even after therapy

You've probably had moments where something shifted. A session where you cried and felt lighter. A book that cracked something open. A meditation where you finally felt calm.

And then it came back.

Here is why. And it has nothing to do with you not trying hard enough.

Healing requires two things

For healing to actually happen and to last, two conditions have to be met:

Most approaches do neither. Some do the first, briefly. Almost none do both.

What the hurt part actually needs

She needs compassion. That is the main ingredient in this whole process, along with love, acceptance, validation, and the doorway to all of it, which is understanding.

Understanding what happened. Why she is hurting. What she went through. And how you can help her.

I know that sounds ridiculously simple. It only sounds simple.

If you don't believe me, try it right now. Try to feel deep compassion for the part of you that is anxious, or tense, or angry.

Not that easy, is it?

Because there is a barrier

Between you and the part of you that needs healing sits a barrier. It is the barrier between your conscious and your subconscious mind, and it is fully formed by around age six or seven.

That is also why we stop being able to remember early childhood. Those memories get tucked behind the barrier. We lose direct access to the subconscious, and our awareness moves into the analytical, thinking part of the mind.

Every kind of healing that happens, happens because that barrier was crossed. If the barrier isn't crossed, healing doesn't happen. Full stop.

So when something has worked for you, whether it was a therapy session, a book, or a meditation, that is what happened. You relaxed enough, for a moment, to slip past the barrier.

The problem is that it happened by chance

It was a random combination of things that let you drop in for a moment. Which is why, when you try to recreate it, it usually doesn't work.

That randomness is what makes healing so slow and so frustrating.

There is another problem too. Those moments are short, and a moment is nowhere near enough for decades of pain to resolve.

So you get a small piece. The relief carries you for a while. Then you get triggered again and realise it was never complete. The search starts over, and it might be months before you stumble into the next piece.

For healing to be reliable instead of accidental, three things have to be true:

Why the change still doesn't stick

Even if you do all of that perfectly, there is still no guarantee it lasts.

You may have already met your younger self in a meditation or a therapy session. You may have had a genuinely powerful experience. And the anxiety still came back.

Here is the missing piece.

When you lived through that original experience, you drew conclusions about yourself, about other people, and about the world. Those conclusions became subconscious beliefs. And for decades since, your thoughts, emotions and behaviours have reinforced them over and over.

To replace those patterns, you need one thing. Repetition. And not just any repetition, but repetition with the barrier down.

That is exactly why affirmations usually do nothing. With the barrier up, they never reach the pattern. They bounce off the surface.

But when targeted messages are repeated with the barrier down, they get in, and they start changing how you think and feel from the inside. This mimics what life spent decades doing to build the old pattern in the first place, except now you are installing the new pattern in a sped up way.

What this looks like in practice

One of my clients had a harsh, critical father who put her down constantly when she was learning maths. She concluded that she wasn't smart enough, and that something was wrong with her.

Decades later, at work, speaking up in a meeting activated all of it. She would be nervous for hours, sometimes days beforehand. Racing heart. Wanting to run. The little girl in her was still bracing to be judged and shouted at.

We helped her cross the barrier, and she met that little girl. She saw where the work situation was actually coming from. She understood that it was never her fault, and that her dad behaved that way because of his own insecurity, not because of anything true about her. She protected that little girl, took her out of the situation, and showed her that it was over. That she is safe now.

Then we made her a recording that she listened to daily, telling her that she is smart, that she can figure things out, that she is exactly as she should be, and that in meetings she feels confident and safe.

Within a few weeks she was presenting with confidence.

This is the difference

Not random moments of relief. A structured process that crosses the barrier every time, goes deep enough to matter, and then repeats the new pattern until it is simply how you are.

That is why the change sticks, and why it tends to keep expanding over time.

If this resonates, the best next step is to feel it rather than read about it.
