Boundaries

Why you feel guilty setting boundaries with your parents

So many capable, confident women still cannot say no to their parents without a wave of guilt and anxiety.

These are women with families of their own. A career. A household they run. Finances they have managed for years, sometimes decades.

And one conversation with a parent can still make them feel seven years old.

It is not a confidence problem

Most of them think they need to work on confidence. On setting boundaries. On learning to stand up for themselves.

So they learn the right words. They rehearse the sentences. They say the thing they practised.

And they still feel awful afterwards.

Because learning what to say does nothing about what you feel while you say it.

What is actually happening

This is not weakness. It is that a part of you still believes your safety depends on that relationship.

Exactly as it did when you were small, when it was true.

So even when you hold the boundary, fear arrives and the self doubt starts, because you are caught between two things at once:

Until those feelings are actually resolved, setting boundaries will always feel heavy. You are asking yourself to do something your nervous system reads as dangerous.

The part that surprises people

You do not need anyone else for this to change.

You do not need your parents to apologise, to understand, or to become different people. You can reach those parts of yourself and give yourself the closure you have been waiting for.

This is not about whether you keep the relationship, or how close you stay. It is about being able to make that decision from a calm, clear place instead of an old and frightened one.

That is when things settle. And more often than you would expect, that is also when something shifts on the other side too, in ways nobody planned.

Saying no should not cost you days of guilt.

If this is familiar, the guilt is not a character flaw. It is an old belief that can be resolved. Let's talk about how.
